The Making Of...Carousel Horse

I have been in a design break...well more like block.
I have white paper in front of me and I sit there looking at it for hours.
Nothing...nothing...nothing!
Nothing came to mind on what to draw or design. After weeks with no new designs I opened my old sketch folder. My sketch folder has everything that gets my muse going. From random photos, clippings, printouts and even candy wrappers. I also have sketches from 2000 to present.
And like magic I had 3 papers full of doodles.

My first fully done design is the carousel horse!

This is the basic sketch i did with pencil.

Then i outline to image with Adobe Illustrator.

Lastly color is added with hints of shading also with Adobe Illustrator.

The
Carousel Horse will be for a necklace.
Using the same horse shape I will be making a unicorn as well!

The Toilet Paper Wedding Dress

3rd Place Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest 2009

So I entered a contest by Cheap-Chic-Weddings.com. The contest is basically this, make a wedding dress out of toilet paper using only glue and tape. I entered this contest before back in 2007. My sister told me about around the last month before the contest ended. So there was no time for amazing. Instead we made a sad "wedding dress". That not only came out to large, it ripped just about everywhere. So I had to give it another try.

My goal was to make a wedding dress that was gorgeous and had a modern look to it. After drawing what was a about a dozen dresses. I finally picked one I was confident with. My knowledge in fashion illustration and skills in industrial sewing machines didn't help me much with making this dress. For weeks I was walking around with toilet paper stuck to my clothes, glue making me stick to myself and tape was hanging all over my room. My struggle came with a reward. I won 3rd place!

Image 2 has the detail that the top had on its side.
I hand cut each flower and glued down the swirled tp.
Image 3 has the detail of the back of the dress.

New Jewelry Cards

I have been working on new jewelry cards since I changed part of my logo. I finally settled on one design. I love the colors and the design work great with all my stuff. Right now there printed on card stock but i hope to get some high gloss paper soon so they look even better. For everyone who wants to make some. Its very easy to make your own.

Things you should know when making you jewelry cards.
•Its very important to get the right paper for your printer (laser or ink jet). Normal non gloss card stock is very affordable but if you have the cash get some high gloss paper, its well worth it.

•When making a strong design for a jewelry card think about the colors and overall design. If you have too much going on your jewelry wont show. Do something simple and where ever your jewelry sits on the card make sure its blank so there is no distraction on your amazing jewelry. Remember its all about the jewelry!

•Size of each card is up to you. My earring and necklace cards allows 6 prints per page. For my ring and pin cards that are a bit smaller I get 8.

•When you print make sure it all fits perfect. Print a test sheet to make sure everything is on the paper correctly. Fix any mistakes if needed.

• Use a good paper trimmer. These are very helpful to get a very straight cut edge. Also if you have chosen to have a folded jewelry card use the paper trimmers scoring blade for the fold line. It makes an amazing professional look for you items

FAQ:
Q.What do I do with the chain hanging on the back of the jewelry card?
A. I roll it up and get a strip of acid free tape and tape the chain down on the jewelry card.

Q.I go to craft shows and I hang some of my items. How can i do that with my jewelry cards?
A. great question! If you hang you jewelry put a hole on top of your jewelry card. Use a good hole punch to give it a sharper look. If you rather hang your necklaces a great way is to use a folded jewelry card. Basically make a square that folds on to the chain. Staple the paper together and then add a hole on top. This looks very professional and keeps items looking neat!

Q. Is it cheaper to buy my jewelry cards?
I got about 100 jewelry cards of different sizes for under $20! I just love being able to change the sizes. Also if you have already some of the material you might as well make some. If you dont have a printer i would recommend to buy some instead. Print shows are expansive and its just not worth it.
